Common Injuries Affecting Your Musculoskeletal Health

Whether you're a professional athlete or a weekend warrior, everyone is prone to experiencing an injury. However, certain injuries are more common than others.

Ankle Sprain

When you sprain your ankle, it means that your ankle’s supportive ligaments have been overstretched or torn. Depending on the severity of the damage, the symptoms of a sprain can range from mild to severe.

Common symptoms of an ankle sprain include:

  • Bruising
  • Swelling and inflammation
  • Tenderness to the touch
  • Instability of the affected ankle

Stress Fractures

Stress fractures are small cracks or severe bruising within a bone that are typically caused by repetitive activities. More often than not, stress fractures occur when there is an abrupt change in physical activity, such as:

  • Trying new exercises
  • Suddenly increasing the intensity of your workout
  • Changing your workout surface

The most common symptoms of a stress fracture include:

  • Pain that goes away during rest
  • Pain during everyday activities
  • Tenderness to the touch
  • Bruising
  • Swelling around the affected area

Shoulder Dislocation

A shoulder dislocation happens when your shoulder joint is moved out of proper alignment. A shoulder dislocation can either be partial, where the head of your upper arm is somewhat out of the socket or complete, where the upper arm is entirely out of the socket.

Common symptoms of an arm dislocation include:

  • Arm weakness
  • Bruising around the shoulder
  • Swelling and inflammation
  • Visible deformity
  • Numbness of the shoulder or upper arm

Please keep in mind that a dislocated shoulder is a medical emergency and should be addressed immediately.
