Top Reproductive Health Concerns for Women
As women, our bodies go through a multitude of changes during each stage of life—from having your first period to pregnancy and menopause. While these physical and chemical changes bring on a host of symptoms, others may be a cause for concern.
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common health issue affecting women that is caused by an imbalance of reproductive hormones. This hormonal imbalance impacts the ovaries’ ability to develop eggs and release them during ovulation, causing abnormal menstrual periods and infertility issues.
Common PCOS symptoms include:
- Irregular periods
- Excessive hair on the face
- Acne
- Thinning hair
- Unexplained weight gain
- Darkening of the skin
- Skin tags
Uterine Fibroids
Uterine fibroids are muscular tumors that grow in the wall of the uterus. In most instances, these tumors are noncancerous and can grow as a singular fibroid, or many can be present within the uterus.
Although most women with uterine fibroids are asymptomatic, they can cause the following:
- Heavy and painful periods
- Feeling full in the pelvic area
- Inflammation of the abdomen
- Pain during sex
- Frequent urination
- Lower back pain
- Infertility
- Complications during pregnancy
Endometriosis
Endometriosis is a uterine health issue that happens when the lining of the uterus grows outside of the womb. This tissue can grow in the following areas of the reproductive system and surrounding organs:
- Ovaries
- Fallopian tubes
- The outer surface of the uterus
- The tissues that hold the uterus in place
- Cervix
- Vulva
- Bladder
- Rectum
Telltale signs and symptoms of endometriosis include:
- Intense menstrual cramps
- Chronic lower back and hip pain
- Pain during or after sex
- Painful bowel movements
- Bleeding between periods
- Infertility
