Laura Smith, Zone III
Member-at-Large
Term Expires November 2028
A retired nursing professional, Laura Smith represents Zone III on the Northern Inyo Healthcare District Board of Directors.
Her journey in healthcare began during high school when she took her first job in the hospital laboratory, later working in the housekeeping department, now known as Environmental Services. During college, she gained additional healthcare experience as a hospital pharmacy technician and a nurse’s assistant. After graduating as a Registered Nurse at the top of her class, Mrs. Smith returned to Bishop to begin her nursing career at Northern Inyo Hospital. Over the years, she embraced the challenges of working in multiple departments, including Medical, Surgical, Obstetrics, Pediatrics, and Orthopedics.
During an evening shift more than 40 years ago, a fellow employee introduced her to Greg Smith, who would soon become her husband. The two were married the following year, and their children and grandchildren were all born at Northern Inyo Hospital.
In 2009, Mrs. Smith was elected to the Bishop City Council, where she served four terms as mayor and dedicated 12 years of public service to the people of Bishop. After a brief sabbatical from elected service, she successfully ran for a position on the Northern Inyo Healthcare District Board of Directors and joined the Board in December 2024.
When not serving the community, Mrs. Smith enjoys spending time with her family, including her seven grandchildren, who keep her busy with their sports, music, and school activities. She and her husband also love walking and hiking with their dogs. Mrs. Smith’s passions include her faith in Jesus Christ, camping, cooking, gardening, and caring for animals.
